01 / Why choose this material

Properties and uses
of stainless steel.

Steel family with at least 10.5 % chromium. Grades 304 and 316L offer good corrosion resistance; the choice depends on the working environment.

CNC machining of stainless steel allows manufacturing parts with drilled holes, housings, and mating surfaces. Before choosing between AISI 304 and 316L, it is advisable to define the environment, loads, and products with which it will come into contact.

Stainless steel applications

Processing equipment

Processing equipment components, depending on contact products.

Brackets and housings

Shrouds and supports for equipment operating in humid environments.

Machine components

Machine elements with strength and stability requirements.

Instrumentation

Parts for instrumentation with geometry and dimensions defined in the drawing.

02 / A choice based on usage

Stainless steel alloys.

Compare the grades and specify the one your design needs. The supply condition also changes the properties.

01

AISI 304

A general-use option for brackets, housings and processing equipment. Corrosion resistance depends on the environment.

02

AISI 316L

It is rated for specific environments with chlorides. Its molybdenum content improves performance compared to 304, without making it immune to corrosion.

Milling and turning allow manufacturing stainless steel parts from a block, plate, or bar. The tool removes material to obtain faces, cavities, drilled holes, and contours according to the design.

Send a 3D model per part in STEP or a native supported format: SLDPRT, X_T, X_B, IPT, CATPART, PRT, SAT, or 3DM. Attach a PDF drawing for threads, inserts, or specific tolerances. STL is accepted only for 3D printing.

Part tolerances

For dimensions without specific tolerances, Proto&Go! applies ISO 2768-f. With a drawing, equivalent tolerances to IT7 can be assessed, depending on the geometry and requested dimensions. Attach the drawing and mark the functional surfaces.

Frequently asked questions

Before manufacturing
in stainless steel.

Properties, applications, and manufacturing: answers to prepare your request.

What is stainless steel and what properties does it have?

Family of steels with at least 10.5% chromium. Grades 304 and 316L offer good corrosion resistance; the choice depends on the working environment. Cold forming can increase the magnetism of certain austenitic stainless steels. After welding, pickling or passivation may be needed to restore corrosion resistance. The added values are references from the published PDF; the supply grade and testing can change them.

What parts can be manufactured in stainless steel?

We can manufacture processing units, supports and housings, machine components, instrumentation. CNC machining allows adapting the geometry to your 3D file. Define the loads, the environment and the finish so we can review the application.

Stainless steel 304 or 316L: which one do I choose to machine a part?

AISI 304 is a general use option. 316L offers greater resistance to certain environments with chlorides, but the choice depends on concentration, temperature, and cleanliness. Indicate the working environment when requesting a quote.

Can machined stainless steel rust?

Yes. Stainless steel can suffer corrosion if the grade or finish is not adequate for the environment. Surface contamination, chlorides, and usage conditions influence it. After welding, pickling or passivation may be necessary.

Is stainless steel 304 and 316L always non-magnetic?

No. Although they are austenitic stainless steels, cold working can increase the magnetism of certain grades. If magnetic response is a functional requirement, indicate it in the request to confirm the material and its condition.

How much does it cost to machine a stainless steel part?

The price to machine stainless steel depends on geometry, grade, tolerances, finish, and quantity. It includes material, preparation, and machining. Upload the 3D file to the Proto&Go! platform to receive a quote with cost and lead time.

What tolerances can I request for a stainless steel part?

For dimensions without specific tolerances, Proto&Go! applies ISO 2768-f. With a drawing, equivalent tolerances to IT7 can be assessed, depending on the geometry and requested dimensions. Attach the drawing and mark the functional surfaces.

What file do I need to manufacture a stainless steel part?

Send a 3D model per part in STEP or a native supported format: SLDPRT, X_T, X_B, IPT, CATPART, PRT, SAT, or 3DM. Attach a PDF drawing for threads, inserts, or specific tolerances. STL is accepted only for 3D printing.
