01 / Why choose this material

Properties and uses
of PA6.

Tough polyamide, wear-resistant, and suitable for guiding elements. It absorbs moisture, which alters its dimensions and properties.

PA6 polyamide, known as Nylon 6, is used in components requiring toughness and wear resistance. It absorbs moisture: its conditioning state influences the dimensions, stiffness, and insulation of a machined part.

02 / A choice based on usage

Choose PA6
according to your part.

These criteria help define the material, geometry, and working conditions before manufacturing.

01

Natural PA6

Reference without reinforcement for machining. Humidity and working conditions are part of the choice.

02

PA6 + 30 % GF

Glass fiber increases stiffness and heat stability. Do not use the same data as for natural PA6.

03

Precision fits

Specify the environment and clearances. Humidity absorption can change the final part size.

The part's function is the starting point.

Indicate loads, temperature, environment, and appearance needed. If the drawing requires a specific grade, include it in the request.

03 / Finishing also counts

Finishes and appearance
of PA6.

Material and process define the surface. These are the key factors for specifying your part's appearance.

Machining finish

The part retains machining marks. Indicate adjustment surfaces and visible faces on the drawing.

Geometry and surfaces

For functional surfaces, define roughness and tolerances in the drawing. Feasibility is reviewed based on grade and geometry.

Your part requirements

Include the expected appearance and usage conditions in your request to confirm the quote.

CNC machining
of PA6.

Milling and turning allow manufacturing PA6 parts from a block, plate, or bar. The tool removes material to obtain faces, cavities, drilled holes, and contours according to the design.

Send a 3D model per part in STEP or a native supported format: SLDPRT, X_T, X_B, IPT, CATPART, PRT, SAT, or 3DM. Attach a PDF drawing for threads, inserts, or specific tolerances. STL is accepted only for 3D printing.

Part tolerances

For dimensions without a specific tolerance, Proto&Go! applies ISO 2768-m. With a drawing, equivalent tolerances to IT11 can be assessed, depending on the geometry and requested dimensions. Attach the drawing and mark the functional surfaces.

Frequently asked questions

Before manufacturing
in PA6.

Properties, applications, and manufacturing: answers to prepare your request.

What is PA6 and what properties does it have?

Tough polyamide, wear-resistant, and suitable for guiding elements. It absorbs moisture, which alters its dimensions and properties. Tensile strength and modulus according to the PA6 PDF: test specimen dry / conditioned at 50% humidity. The indicated elongation corresponds to the dry test specimen. Continuous use is a reference for natural extruded PA6; moisture and reinforcement change the properties.

What parts can be manufactured in PA6?

You can manufacture gears, bushings, sliding guides, pinions. CNC machining allows adapting the geometry to your 3D file. Define the loads, environment, and finish so we can review the application.

Does machined Nylon 6 change size with humidity?

Yes. PA6 absorbs moisture and this can alter dimensions and mechanical properties. For precise fits, the working environment and conditioning must be considered. Indicate clearances and functional dimensions when requesting the part.

What is the difference between PA6 and glass fiber-reinforced PA6?

PA6 with 30% glass fiber offers greater stiffness and heat stability. Fiber orientation and the semi-finished product also influence performance. Natural PA6 data does not automatically describe the reinforced variant.

Is machined PA6 and 3D printed PA12 equivalent?

No. They are different polyamides and are manufactured via different processes. The PA6 in the catalog is machined; PA12 is printed via Multi Jet Fusion. Compare geometry, humidity, finish, and part requirements before swapping them.

How much does it cost to machine a PA6 part?

The price of machining PA6 depends on the geometry, grade, tolerances, finish, and quantity. It includes material, preparation, and machining. Upload the 3D file to the Proto&Go! platform to receive a quote with cost and lead time.

What tolerances can I request for a PA6 part?

For dimensions without a specific tolerance, Proto&Go! applies ISO 2768-m. With a drawing, equivalent tolerances to IT11 can be assessed, depending on the geometry and requested dimensions. Attach the drawing and mark the functional surfaces.

What file do I need to manufacture a PA6 part?

Send a 3D model per part in STEP or a native supported format: SLDPRT, X_T, X_B, IPT, CATPART, PRT, SAT, or 3DM. Attach a PDF drawing for threads, inserts, or specific tolerances. STL is accepted only for 3D printing.
